Tim & Barry are pioneering UK filmmakers and photographers who became central figures in documenting and shaping the evolution of Britain’s underground music scene since the early 2000s. The duo built their platform by filming the rise of grime and UK garage with a hands-on approach that brought the music to a broader audience through “Tim and Barry TV” as the scenes evolved.
They became early adopters of online video, producing some of the UK’s first purpose-made online music videos and helping redefine how underground scenes could be captured and shared. With projects like Risky Roadz and Just Jam, their work expanded from freestyles and live performances to producer-focused formats and live-streamed broadcasts, setting the blueprint that others would follow. Through collaborations with artists like Boy Better Know, Giggs, and Tempa T., their work became synonymous with UK music history.
When you started, Grime was still forming its identity. how conscious were you that you were capturing the birth of a movement?
I'd say pretty conscious, we definitely knew something was happening and we were aware. Yes, it wasn't even really a scene when we started. I'd say it all started with me DJing, really, at the Electricity Showrooms. I used to have a weekly residency there with Dave Cushway from Slam City Skates/Rough Trade, we were playing hip-hop, R&B, dancehall, and garage.
The garage we were playing was like the dark side as well, people like El B and Z Bias, and all of that and MCs were coming down but we had a big fight in there, and we had to stop playing garage.
