TOX DDS is one of the most prolific and notorious vandals in the city of London’s history, known for his extensive and omnipresent coverage across London’s underground transit system.

Beginning as a teenager writing graffiti in South London during the early 2000’s, his unflinching approach to vandalism has remained steadfast in a city that has gone through major changes since the turn of the millennium.

Through more than a quarter century dedicated to fighting what he describes as “a war between my world and theirs” in one of the most heavily surveilled cities on Earth, his simple yet ubiquitous signature has become permanently engrained in the minds of police, city officials, and Londoners on their daily commutes both above and below ground.

In a rare interview, Dan Hancox speaks with Tox for Living Proof’s London Issue on watching his hometown transform, his approach to creating art for galleries, and achieving immortality through graffiti.

Outside Moorgate station in London’s ornate old banking district, groups of students dart around excitedly playing what looks like a pub-crawl-meets-urban-exploring game. One thing catches the eye immediately: they’re all wearing t-shirts featuring the famous London Underground roundel. London has increasingly become an adult playground packed with escape rooms, immersive experiences, walking tours and urban treasure hunts. Turning the city into a place to roam, play and explore has become big business.

“Good for them,” TOX says. “We’re all doing our own little thing, interacting with the city in our own ways, running around in it like little gerbils.”
